A Gentle Guide to the Awkward In Between of Week 10
Welcome to Week 10. You are officially in the double digits, and so close to the end of the first trimester. This week can feel… strange. You're in the thick of the exhaustion and nausea, but you likely don't have a neat, perfect bump to show for it yet. Instead, you might just be feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and a little bit "off" in your own skin.
Let's be honest: this is the awkward in between phase. You're trying to hide how miserable you feel, your pants probably don't fit, and you might be wondering if you'll ever feel like yourself again.
Other articles will tell you that your baby is the size of a prune. That’s a sweet fact, but we're here to talk about you and the very real, un-glamorous, and completely normal feelings of this week. It's okay if you don't feel beautiful and glowing right now.
"Is This Really Happening to My Body?" A Field Guide to Your Week 10 Feelings
As your body ramps up its baby building efforts, you might notice some new and surprising changes. You are not "going crazy," and you are not the only one.
The "None of My Pants Fit, But I Don't Look Pregnant" Feeling
The bloating is real. Your uterus is growing, and your digestion is slowing down, which can leave you feeling puffy and uncomfortable. It's frustrating when you don't feel like you "look" pregnant, but just feel bigger. Be kind to yourself and break out the leggings. Comfort is your top priority.
The "Road Map on My Chest" Feeling
Are you noticing new, blue veins showing up on your chest and stomach? It might look a little startling, but it's actually a beautiful sign of the incredible work your body is doing. Your blood volume is increasing dramatically to support the placenta and your baby, and those visible veins are just proof of that amazing new life-force.
The "What Is Going On Down There?" Feeling
You might also notice an increase in vaginal discharge (leukorrhea). As long as it's thin, milky, and mild smelling, it's a completely normal and healthy sign that your body is protecting the birth canal from infection. It’s one of the many un glamorous but essential parts of this journey.
The Beautiful Secret: Your Baby is Practicing for Life
While you're navigating all these strange new body feelings, your tiny prune has made a huge leap. This week, your baby officially graduates from an embryo to a fetus. This means the most critical part of development is complete, and the work of growing and maturing has begun.
Even more magical? Those little arm buds can now bend at the elbows, and tiny tooth buds are forming under the gums. Your baby is making small, spontaneous movements, practicing for a lifetime of wiggles and kicks. You can’t feel it yet, but a whole person is taking shape inside you.
A Survival Kit for the In Between Phase
This week is about finding comfort in the uncomfortable. It’s about being gentle with a body that is working so incredibly hard.
Invest in a "Belly Band" or Leggings: You don't need maternity clothes yet, but giving yourself permission to wear something that doesn't dig into your waist can be a huge relief.
Snack Smart (for Energy): The fatigue is still very real. Keep snacks that have a mix of protein and complex carbs with you (like cheese and crackers, or nuts and dried fruit) to keep your blood sugar stable.
Find Your People: You don't have to tell the whole world your news yet, but confiding in one or two trusted friends can make the loneliness of this phase feel so much lighter.
Focus on What You Can Control: When your body feels out of control, focus on small, comforting routines. A cup of tea in the morning, a favorite podcast on your commute, a warm bath at night. These small anchors can make a big difference.
You are in the home stretch of the hardest part. You are strong, you are capable, and you are doing an incredible job.
