The First Trimester Finish Line is in Sight (But It Feels a Million Miles Away)
Welcome to Week 9. If you're reading this from your bed or the couch, and the thought of moving feels absolutely impossible, you are in the right place. This week, the exhaustion can feel like a lead blanket. It's a deep, bone-weary fatigue that can make you feel completely unlike yourself.
You're so close to the end of the first trimester, a milestone that feels like it should come with a trophy and a week-long nap. But right now, it can feel like you're crawling to the finish line. You might be feeling impatient, irritable, and just so over feeling sick and tired.
Other articles will tell you your baby is the size of a green olive. That's a lovely image, but we're here to talk about the person who is feeling completely drained. It's okay to be tired of being tired. Your feelings are so valid.
"Why Am I So Moody?" A Field Guide to Your Week 9 Feelings
The hormonal symphony playing in your body is at its peak, and it can feel like you're on the world's most unpredictable emotional rollercoaster.
The "Crying at a Puppy Commercial" Feeling
One minute you might feel fine, and the next you're weeping at something that has never made you cry before. These sudden mood swings can be jarring, but they are a completely normal and very real part of this week. Your body is flooded with hormones, and it's okay if you feel a little lost at sea.
The "Everything My Partner Does is Annoying" Feeling
Are you feeling a short fuse with the people you love most? It's not you, it's the hormones. When you're feeling physically miserable and exhausted, your patience can be paper-thin. It's okay to feel irritable. It doesn't make you a bad person or a bad future mom; it just makes you a very, very pregnant one.
The Beautiful Secret: Your Baby is Officially a Baby
Here is a truly incredible thought for the moments when you're feeling at your worst: this week, your little one officially graduates from being an embryo to a fetus. This is a huge milestone.
That tiny olive is now looking more and more like a miniature human. Their heart has finished dividing into four chambers, and those tiny new muscles are starting to work—your baby is making their very first spontaneous movements. You can't feel them yet, but it's happening. A tiny, secret dance is going on inside you, even when you're just lying on the couch.
A Survival Kit for the Utterly Exhausted
This week is about radical self-kindness. Forget what you "should" be doing and focus on what you need.
Cancel Your Plans: You have a standing invitation from your couch. It's okay to RSVP "yes" to rest and "no" to everything else.
Ask for Help (Even if it's Hard): Can your partner make dinner? Can a friend pick up your groceries? People want to help you. Let them.
Find Your Comfort Show: Sometimes, the best you can do is lie down and watch something that requires zero brainpower and makes you feel cozy. This is a perfectly acceptable coping mechanism.
Remember This Isn't Forever: On the hardest days, whisper this to yourself: "This is a season, not a lifetime." The energy will come back. The nausea will fade. You will feel like yourself again.
You are almost there. You are doing the hardest, most important work in the world. Be so incredibly gentle with yourself.
